I killed my cat a year ago. I had no idea on how this would change the trajectory of my life.

Let me start off by saying, I never actually meant to kill my cat. One day, while I was home alone, I walked into the kitchen and found out that I had run out of milk, juice, eggs, and butter. I thought, this can’t be happening, I’ve been home all day, I haven’t left my house, yet somehow all of the food is gone.

I had to know, who or what could be eating all of the food? It was like having a gremlin living in my house. I started to form a plan. I was going to boil some milk, then dip the spoon in it, then place the spoon next to the fridge. Then I would place a banana peel on the floor and on the other side of the banana peel I placed a mouse trap. I had to test it to see if it would work. That’s when it happened. I called the cat’s name, placed some food in the spoon, and as he came running towards the food I pushed the spoon out of the way and caught my cat with the mouses trap.

As I went to throw it away I realized there was no trash pick up that week because it was a holiday. I decided to bury the cat in my backyard. As I was digging the hole, I had to stop half way through to get the dead cat out of the hole. I placed it in the middle of the backyard. As I continued digging, it started to get dark. I got frustrated and left the cat in the backyard.

The next morning, I received a call from animal control asking if I knew anything about a dead cat. I said no, I don’t even have a cat. They told me that they found a dead cat in my yard with my address on the name tag around its neck. I immediately hung up the phone and went outside to get the cat. I placed the cat in the trash can. I thought that was the last of it.

Boy was I wrong, the next morning I received another call. The garbage man called to tell me he found a dead cat in my garbage. I told him that I don’t know anything about a dead cat. He ask me to come outside to confirm that it was my garbage can. I said I’m not home, I’ve been out of town for the last week. The garbage man told me that some weird guy answered the door and claimed that he didn’t speak English.

I decided to go back home. I walked in my house and I found the garbage man standing in the middle of my living room. I asked what he was doing in my house and he told me he was looking for the man that claimed that he didn’t speak English. I asked him who let him in my house and he pointed to the front door. I walked to the front door, opened it, and there was a police officer standing at my front door.

I asked the police officer what he was doing at my door and he said he was there to take my statement. I told him I don’t have anything to say. He said that the garbage man called the police and reported a man inside of my house claiming that he didn’t speak English. I told him I’ve been out of town for the last week. The police called the garbage company and they told him that it was me who asked them not to pick up my trash this week. The police took me down to the station where they booked and charged me for filing a false police report.

I spent the night in jail. The next morning they let me out on bail. I hired a lawyer and we went to court. My lawyer told the judge that I was never inside of my house at anytime. The judge gave me time served. As I was walking out of the courtroom, the police took me into custody again for lying to the judge.

I spent another night in jail, then took a plea deal. I had to do community service and I had a restraining order placed on me. I couldn’t go within a hundred feet of the garbage man. The police took me down to the station to take a mug shot and fingerprints. As I was leaving the station, there was the garbage man. He took out his phone and called the police. They placed me under arrest for violating my restraining order and harassment.

Again, I spent another night in jail. Then I went to court. The judge gave me sixty days in jail with twenty days credit for time served. After I was released from jail, I had to do my community service. They made me pick up trash on the side of the highway. That’s when it happened again. The garbage man pulled over and started staring at me. I told my superviser that the man in the vehicle was staring at me. He went to ask him what he was doing and the garbage man told him that he was just making sure that I picked up all of the trash.

I snapped and told the garbage man that he was crazy. He called the police and told them that I threatened him. They placed me under arrest again for harassment. I took another plea deal and had to do a hundred and twenty days in jail. After I got out of jail I thought it was finally over.

That’s when I received a call from the police. They informed me that I had a warrant for my arrest for violating my probation. They told me to turn myself in. I told them that I was home, come and get me. They came and placed me under arrested. They took me down to the station and placed me in a cell.

I spent the night in jail again. The next morning they took me down to the courtroom. The judge told me that I had violated my parole by not turning myself in. I told the judge that I did turn myself in. The judge told me that the police report said that I refused to turn myself in until the police came to my house. I ask to see the police report.

The police report stated that I was placed under arrest for violating my probation. Then it stated that I refused to turn myself in. Then it stated that the police placed me under arrest at my house. I told the judge that the report was wrong. I turned myself in and told the police to come get me. The judge told me that I was guilty until proven innocent.

I ask the judge how could I prove I turned myself in if they claimed that I didn’t. The judge told me that wasn’t his problem. He sentenced me to thirty days in jail. I took the plea deal. Before I left the courtroom the police told me that I still had a warrant for my arrest for lying to the judge.

I’m still in jail. I have to go to court in two weeks. I just wish I had never killed my cat.
