What are the historical precedents for the US using armed forces in a city?

There have been plenty of examples in the 20th century of the US government using armed troops in cities, but most of them appear to involve the national guard stepping in as an armed police force. The closest I can think of is the 1992 Los Angeles riots, when George H.W. Bush deployed the 1st Marine Division and 82nd Airborne Division as "federal soldiers" in support of the national guard.<br><br>Are there any historical precedents for the US deploying the military as a combat force within cities?
