I stole dozens of pairs of underwear from Walmart in the 90s and I feel like an idiot.

When I was about 12 years old, some friends and I discovered that by using a crimping tool and pliers, we could disable the anti-theft devices sewn in some clothing items.

I was going through a difficult time in my life and was eager to fit in with these new friends. They suggested that we steal some underwear. I was horrified, but I also didn’t want to seem scared or chickenshit so I went along with it.

If I remember correctly, the devices were like tiny metal cases sewn into the crotch with a pin that pointed towards the seam. If you crimped the pin down hard enough, you could pull it completely out. We did this in several different items of clothing, but the underwear was the easiest and smallest.

We took dozens of pairs over a period of several weeks. I think we each had accumulated well over 50 pairs a piece before we stopped. I still have a few pairs from the haul.

I don’t know why I still have them. I wear a completely different size now and I didn’t even like the color of most of the underwear that we took. I think I just haven’t gotten around to parting with them for some reason.

I feel like an idiot for wasting so much of my time on this as a kid. Also, in retrospect, I hate the fact that we thought that stealing women’s underwear was okay. It was really fucked up on our part and I don’t think that I ever really acknowledged how messed up it was until now.
