Artificial intelligence-generated profile pictures are now banned on Instagram, the social media platform announced in its updated guidelines. Users found violating the guidelines could face account suspension or have their content removed.

The new policy change was announced by Instagram Head Adam Mosseri in a video. "You can't just generate an image and then pass it off as a human. For instance, you can't have an AI-generated profile picture," he said in the video. According to Mosseri, content generated using AI tools is not allowed "unless they have been edited or manipulated to some extent."

There are certain exceptions, however. For instance, users can use AI to edit their photos and the platform will allow AI-generated content for ads. The new policy change has left many users on the platform confused, as it is unclear how the platform would actually police AI-generated content. Moreover, the updated guidelines don't specify what types of editing would qualify an AI-generated image for posting.

Nonetheless, Meta has assured users that it has made a "huge investment" in improved technology to detect deepfakes, or AI-generated content. The company claims that its detection tool has a high level of accuracy and that it is capable of identifying a wide range of frauds, including profile pictures that deceive or impersonate people. However, the accuracy of its detection tool is an open question.

widgetsmassage, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons
