My Mother told another family member to tell me she loves me, instead of calling or texting me directly. She died 2 days ago....

This may not seem weird to anyone else, but it is to me...

My Mother (68F) and I (37F) haven't always had a great relationship. When I was younger she was always critical of everything I did and would always compare me to my cousins. (Not sure why, but it always felt like it). In 2016 my Father and her divorced and she moved out of the family home (my childhood home), in 2018 I cut her completely out of my life. She tried to re-enter in 2020 but it was short lived. In 2022 she texted me to tell me she was sick and in 2023 she asked me for money. After that text I deleted her number and moved on from her. (I know it seems bad, but I'm not sorry. She has no one to blame but herself for that)

Anyway, I got a message from a cousin on Monday asking if I had heard about my Mother's passing. I wasn't surprised given her health but it was sad. She's the only Mother I'll ever have so it felt a little bad but I'm not crying in my room or anything. Anyways, my cousin said "Hey cuz! I need to ask you something. Your mother asked me to give you a message before she passed, do you want to hear it?"

I'm sitting here thinking to myself "Wow, okay. She's dying. I wonder what she's gonna say, an apology? I'm sorry? Something?"

My cousin then said "She told me to tell you that she loves you. Nothing else, just 'I love you'."

And that's it. My Mother was on her death bed, and asked a family member to pass along those three simple (but sweet) words to me. Not a phone call, not a text message, not an email... nothing. A message through someone else.

I'm not really sure how to process this. It feels a bit off to me but I'm not sure if that's just me being dramatic or if it actually is weird.

What are your thoughts?
