What was life like for an everyday person 50 years ago in a communist country?

This is mostly inspired by the fact that I saw a documentary from the 80s in which there was a sequence with everyday people in the city of Prague. The people who were on the street looked like they had no idea it was being shot. They looked very serious, no one smiled, and a lot of people looked at the camera hateful and scowling. Also, from what I know from my grandma who lived in a communist country during that time, it was very hard to find certain products in stores, fruits and vegetables were very limited and the society was very much isolated from the rest of the world. There was a lack of infrastructure and not very many people had cars. The quality of living was very low and a lot of people lived in blocks of flats that had very thin walls and little insulation, and a lot of the buildings were in disrepair with broken elevators and leaky bathrooms.

What did everyday life look like? What did they do for entertainment? Were there a lot of jobs available?
