Ive always been fascinated with the early 1900's, And I'm not sure where this question belongs cause it's not really history but I think you guys would be good to ask.

So everything I know about this time period is your average man used to wake up at 5, then he'd walk to the train station, And from there he'd go to work at an office, Until 5 when he'd go to a bar for a couple hours until the wife calls and says to be home.

Is that really true? I've always thought it was just a fun story we tell until I read the autobiography of a guy who was an engineer in the 1930's and thats exactly what he said was his daily routine before he got married.

But I mean, What did he actually do? I know most office workers were salesmen, But how did they actually get sales? I imagine they didn't just sit at a desk and wait for the phone to ring like they do now.
