CMV: America doesn't have a problem with gun violence, it has a problem with mental illness.

This is a discussion I've been having with some friends and family lately.

My thinking is that if you look at the statistics of mass shootings in America, the shooters almost always have a history of mental illness or personality disorders. From my understanding, they can't acquire firearms legally because of these disorders, but do so illegally anyway.

If I'm truly correct in my thinking, then the focus should shift from gun reform to reforming mental health services. This means more training for healthcare workers, better funding for mental health facilities, and more education for teachers and parents on spotting early signs of disorders, which can help curb mass shootings.

If I'm truly wrong in my thinking, then please, change my view.

EDIT: To clarify to some responders, I am not saying that mental illness is the sole contributor to mass shootings or gun violence. There are many other factors, like politics, economics, etc. I made a simplified claim in the title for the sake of long-form discussion.
