LPT: If you have a student visa and you're working a job that doesn't pay you, tell them that you're dropping out of school and see how quick they suddenly have money for you

This has happened to me twice now and I felt like I won some free money. I'm an international student and I had to get a student visa in order to study abroad. The point of the student visa is that you're only using it to study in a foreign country for a period of time before either going back home or applying for a different visa. The point of the visa is not to work in the foreign country, so employers cannot legally hire anyone with a student visa.

However, a lot of companies take in students knowing fully well that they're only in the country to study and they won't be staying long enough to be able to sue them. They don't pay you in hopes that you either don't care enough and don't want to be bothered with the legal system or that you feel bad firing your boss when you know that the company will suffer. So you just do all the work for free and they get the benefit of having another worker at no extra cost. Recently I told my boss that I was dropping out and I got my pay that same day. This happened to me at two different jobs and it worked like a charm both times.

EDIT: Doing this may cause your company to not let you use them as a reference in the future but at least you get paid.
