His strategy, he said, was to die with just $20 million. Not because the Microsoft cofounder believed he needed to leave an inheritance for his children, but because he had a vision of family wealth that was more in line with living modestly, working, and experiencing the authentic struggles of a typical middle-class upbringing. In other words, Gates wanted his kids to experience the world as it was, not as it was through the lens of wealth and privilege.
