I have trouble with buildings.

I have read many posts here of world builders discussing cities, languages, governments, superheroes, magic, and big powerful beings. But one thing I noticed was buildings. I haven't really seen many posts about buildings. I would like to have a better understanding of buildings.

So I'm reaching out to you all for help with this big world building idea I have.

Building buildings.

How would you go about building buildings? Say you have five plots of land in a fantasy forest. On each plot you want to build big buildings like a church or a library, castle, big shop or guild house. Or maybe you have an island you're colonizing and you want to start a port city.

I was thinking you start by surveying the land to see what resources you have available. Then you get together a team of workers, masons, blacksmiths, carpenters, and other skilled professions. Then you just work together to build it, right?

What would you name the building?

I don't know. I guess a lot of it depends on what the building is for and who decides on the name. But how did the name come about and what does the name even mean?

What does the buildings purpose even serve?

A port city would have docks and warehouses and places for sailors to stay and all the businesses that cater to ships and sailors. Like blacksmiths and shipwrights.

But like imagine you're a king in the middle ages and you decide to build a monument to yourself. You pick out a great spot with a commanding view of your kingdom. You make the building the centerpiece of your capital city. You have artists paint beautiful frescoes on the ceilings. And what do you call it? What does what you name it even mean? What does it even look like?

What if you had a powerful artifact that could do great things for your kingdom but only if it was placed on that spot. So you call it a temple and use it as a place of worship even though you know in your heart that you're just using it as a tool to make your kingdom big and powerful.

Maybe you decide to make the artifact a symbol of the kingdom. Maybe you make the artifact the crown. But like imagine all the work you have to go through just to build a monument to the crown. First you have to make the crown. You hire skilled jewelers and they have to go on a quest to find the right materials. And they have to put the crown together.

And all the problems that come with it. How do you move such a big and heavy and valuable item? Who decides who gets to be in charge of it?

That's still just the monument. But like imagine the buildings you have to build to house the masons and the miners and the blacksmiths? how do you pay them for their labor? What do you use as currency? How do you handle disputes among the workers? How do you pay for feeding and housing the workers?

How much labor goes into a single building? Say you have a big castle in your kingdom. You have a big moat filled with water. You have a big wall made of stone. You have a forest for wood. And a mountain for big stones. But it's a huge undertaking. What makes someone decide to tackle such a big project as building a castle? How do they decide on the location and the style and the materials? How do they decide how big the moat should be and how many trees to knock down how many stones to mine?

Or imagine you're a guild of thieves in a big city. You want to build a secret underground tunnel network that connects to the sewers. You want to build big traps to protect the tunnels from the city guards. You want secret passages and hidden doors. You want secret rooms for meetings. How do you even go about building all of that? What do you use for materials? Do you hire masons and engineers or do you do it all yourselves?

Or imagine you're a small village of farmers. You want to build a place to store grain and food for the winter. But you don't have money or resources. How do you decide on the location or the materials or the design? What if you decide to build something big and someone suggests a smaller building? How do you decide?

Or imagine you're a group of colonizers who have just landed on a new continent that you know nothing about. How do you decide where to build and what materials to use and what style? What if you're trying to build a place of worship? What if you're trying to build a big monument?

It's just so many things to consider. I feel like I'm just imagining a big building out of thin air.
