Does anyone else find the concept of 401ks utterly ridiculous?

I was only able to find articles examining its economic effects. I want opinions from an average person. Here's my take:

When I first learned about 401(k), my initial reaction was that it makes no sense. It's just utterly ridiculous. If you're in your 60s-80s, you should not be working (unless you really want to, which some do). You should be enjoying retirement instead of working 40 hours a week. No wonder the retirement age has been constantly increasing. All 401(k) does is discourage you from retiring. People should be able to retire at 60-65 and live comfortably without having to work.
