Source: The company agreed to enhance the security of Zoom customers’ data after the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said it misled people about what it does with their video and audio recordings. The FTC said Zoom had claimed its calls were encrypted from direct end-to-end, when in fact the company had its own key to unscramble data. Zoom told the BBC it was not fined or punished for its actions. The company said it was pleased the issue was resolved. "During the pandemic, Zoom worked to balance its platform's security features to enable users to stay connected and keep businesses running, while prioritising users' privacy and security," it said. In November 2019, a Zoom user discovered what was known as a zero-day vulnerability, where an attacker could use Zoom's software to spy on users. And in April, a vice-president at Zoom said 57,000 people had had uninvited guests enter their calls or meetings. Video meeting apps have seen a surge in use this year amid the global pandemic. The security of these platforms has been repeatedly tested, with some struggling to cope. In April, the UK's Ministry of Defence, which has used Zoom for sensitive meetings, warned users against discussing anything they wouldn't want shared on social media.
