You go to do a task that you've never done before. For example, consider venturing out into the wilderness and laying fiber optic cables. It might be tapping pipe with a breaker bar, cutting concrete, etc. It can be anything and any job. The answer, is to imagine what the very next step is.

For example, the very next step for laying fiber optic cables is to buy the fiber optic cable that is the correct type. Then the next step is to rent a truck or car. Then to fill that car or truck with gas. Then to put the shocks of fiber optic cable in the back of the vent. Then to drive it to the site. Then to pull it out of the truck. And on and on.

You don't even need to "learn" how to do a task or look it up in the immediate. You can learn how to do each individual step one at a time. Then the next step, learn how to do THAT. Then the next step, learn how to do THAT. You can learn how to do tasks for work that you've never done before by learning how to do each individual step. It isn't even about being book smart or street smart, or some sort of savant, its about knowing how to do the very next step.
