““Some People Are Just Stuck. F**k Them” is becoming the default view of center-left people on poverty.” What are your thoughts on it?

This is the opening line to a quote I want to put below from someone in the comments, but it rings so close to home both for the left and the right.

I am currently a very left leaning person. I love the idea of social welfare, I want universal healthcare, a tax policy that guarantees a UBI, I basically want Canada policy but US style. But if you open your mouth and say that nowadays you’ll be labelled a communist. I followed US politics some 4 years ago and I loved Elizabeth Warren. But in my mind, she was labour in the UK… left.

I came from a country with not the best social welfare system, but a tiny bit better than the US. Now since my teens I’ve always been on the left, it just feels right. But the more I follow US politics the more I’m starting to see this attitude becoming a default view.

I’m in the UK where we currently have a labour government. These attitudes are as far as I’m aware unheard of here, or I’ve only heard it on middle aged men who have never struggled with the idea of having to choose food or heat. I’ve had that experience, and I entirely agree that the left is just as bad as the right when it comes to social welfare.

I’ve read a comment in the original post which I think just hits a nail on the head. Quote below.

“They act like he’s not a guy who scams social services out of money and is a burglar. When will people stop feeling sorry for the “victims” of capitalism who also victimize everyone else, including the poor who need government assistance. Fuck him.”

Don’t get me wrong, the way poverty is dealt with at the moment is a shitshow and completely fucked, I agree with the idea that we need a change. But I don’t want to help scammers and shirkers. When I see it when I’m struggling why should I help them out and not someone who is doing all that they can to get out of that situation.

I have never struggled with the idea of money. I make enough to live, and I can afford to live quite comfortably. But when I was younger, I struggled with that idea. There were some years where I had to choose between food or heat, I was hospitalised because of both malnutrition and hypothermia. Still I struggle to this day, but I did all that I could to help get myself out.

Seeing people scam the system who don’t need it when you are literally rationing food and just trying to survive, really really makes you angry.

It’s a super controversial topic and I get that. I just simply can’t agree with the idea of just giving money to someone who needs it in the way that people want it nowadays. Money should be just a means to a tool. Not a long term solution. I understand that right now there doesn’t seem to be long term solutions to these issues. But the attitude of ‘Fuck them’ is starting to gain a bit more traffic on the left.

US politics specifically refers to universal healthcare. If you come from Europe you basically get asked if you believe that healthcare is a right or whatever. I deal with healthcare on a daily basis and I can already see so many people who want universal healthcare just to exploit it for whatever gain. I have people in my day to day who don’t work and in their 20s have had a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (icd) and surgeries.

They do drugs, they smoke heavily, they know it’s bad, but they just don’t care. But they will use the system to get ops. They don’t take the steps to improve themselves.

I’m so utterly confused when reading the comments on that post. These weren’t people who deserve healthcare, nutrition etc… They were self destructive.

Seeing more and more of that attitude from more and more people simply makes me want to not help them at all.

I’m so utterly confused, I’m on the left. It’s where I stand politically, it’s what I believe…

What are your thoughts?

Edit: Some people have said this post is in the wrong place, I’ve posted this on a few subreddits and I think this is the one that is most relevant. This is not about the economics… but more about the views on economics.
