I have been a gun owner for 30 years. I have always been a gun owner and shooter, but never a gun nut. Gun ownership has always been about recreation for me, particularly hunting.

Over the last 15 years I have become increasingly aware of my own mortality and how it affects my family. I have come to realize that gun ownership is a liability that I am no longer comfortable with.

Previously, I had always kept my hunting guns in the house (in a safe) and was not too concerned about my kids getting to them. A little bit of effort and education was enough.

However, now that the kids are gone and I am getting older, I am no longer comfortable keeping guns in the house. There is far too much of a chance that I will be the one who unexpectedly hurts myself or others, and now I have grandkids who are able to get to the guns.

After considering the costs, I have decided that it is not worth the expense of a separate, secure storage location. It is far cheaper and easier to sell my guns and keep my house gun free.

I know that this is not the right choice for everyone, but it is the right choice for me.

ETA: I will be selling most of my guns and keeping my .40 Winchester, .38 Special, and 12 gauge, which I consider personal items that I have inherited.

ETA2: I have a lot of guns that are no longer legal to purchase in the US, which is great, as they are worth a lot more now. Many of them I have already sold, and my sons are selling more.

Rant: I have trouble understanding the difficulty people have with registering guns. It makes no sense to me that you wouldn't want to keep track of your gun in the same way that you would your car.

Winter has come to the mountains, and tonight it is snowing. I am glad to be done with this.

ETA 3: I am in Australia. Knowing that I am no longer a gun owner makes me feel good.
