What was it like to live in the United States in the 1890s-1900?

Sort of a weird question. I’ve been an history buff for years. I’ve done lots of research and have a pretty good picture of the early 1900s, the 1800s, and back to ancient Rome.

But there is something about the year 1895 that I just can’t seem to get a feel for. Part of it is that it was smack in the middle of two distinct eras. The old west was dying. Cattle were being replaced by sheep, which used less land and required less hands, and the railroads were expanding all over the country.

This is probably a pipe dream, but I would love to hear from anyone who’s great great grandparent used to talk about life in the late 1800s. I’m sure there must be plenty of people in their 80s who’s great great grandparent was born prior to 1850 or so.

So what was 1895 like?
