In August 2014, the Chinese government announced a Universal Suffrage model for the Hong Kong Chief Executive election with pre-screening candidates. The decision sparked protests by some Hong Kong people for demanding genuine universal suffrage and to directly nominate candidates. The leader of the movement, Joshua Wong, publicly called it the umbrella revolution. Other parties called it the occupy central movement. Through the 3 months of the movement, the protesters occupied the main roads of Hong Kong and was clashing with police. The movement ended with nothing but chaos, and the idea of Hong Kong Independence was born. The Hong Kong Government, China Government, and most of the citizens of Hong Kong through all these years until 2020 very much condemned the idea of Hong Kong Independence.

Fast Forward in 2020, when the Hong Kong national security law is announced, the idea of Hong Kong Independence was resurrected by the protesters. People like Nathan Law were waving the flag of independence and were supported by thousands of people.

Fast forward in 2022. Hong Kong people are migrating to the UK in huge numbers and Taiwan. The Taiwan government was opening their door for Hong Kong people. So it seems that the Taiwan Government that would support Hong Kong Independence as well.

Fast forward in 2023. A former leader of the Hong Kong Independence movement, Brian Leung, was telling people that he was wrong and had misled the Hong Kong people. He says Taiwan independence won't work the same way for Hong Kong. Taiwan was a colony of Japan for 50 years and they all spoke Japanese. Taiwan was seamlessly transitioned into a Republic of China and became a democracy. Hong Kong was a colony of the UK for 150 years. Hong Kong didn't have the institutions and cultures to become an independent country. Hong Kong as an independent country would become a failed state. The treaties for Hong Kong to be an independent country was never clearly defined. "One country, Two systems" towers over Hong Kong and a huge burden to become an independent country.

Furthermore, Brian Leung pointed out that the Taiwan Government may not support the value of Hong Kong People. Taiwan is becoming a dictatorship and is very nationalistic. Taiwan wants to turn Hong Kong into a Chinese city whose people speak Mandarin. Taiwan is afraid that US power is declining and the west power is a double-edged sword. Taiwan's strategy is to make friends with countries like China and America at the same time. There are even people in Taiwan that are willing to be part of China as long as Taiwan is a democratic country. Taiwan Democracy is different from Hong Kong Democracy. Taiwan is afraid of Hong Kong Independence.

Some conclusions that can be drawn:
The Hong Kong Independence was the result of the Occupation movement.
Support for Hong Kong Independence was the result of the National Security Law.
But in reality, Hong Kong Independence is an illusion and a pipe dream.
Hong Kong people get played by the Western Media, Taiwan Government, American politicians, etc. Taiwan Independence won't work for Hong Kong.

Edit: I will answer all questions in this thread. You people have tons of questions. But I won't let you do it on your own. You need to study history. You need to do the research. You don't need some random people on the internet to spoon-feed you. That being said. Let's get some discussions going.

Edit 2: Brian Leung has a history. He's a thug and is very nationalistic and offensive, very violent. All the media in Hong Kong dislikes Brian Leung. He ripped up the hat of a Chinese resident that was trying to study in the Hong Kong University library. He was very nationalistic. Even in China there are people like Brian Leung and they will be punished as well. Many people are very much against Brian Leung.

Edit 3: Taiwan, not Chinese Taipei, is a recognized UN member state with full sovereignty until 1971. In 1971, the UN recognized China as the sole legitimate representative of all of China in the UN and the PRC took the seat of China in the UN. It doesn't mean Taiwan is not an independent country if they are not part of the UN. Taiwan has a legitimate government that was established in 1911. Hong Kong is a British Colony, and being ruled under one country, two systems since 1997. Taiwan is a different story. Hong Kong is not allowed to be an independent country but Taiwan is.
