I stole so much food when I was a store manager at a subway because I was sick of feeding my family fast food.

This is a confession I’ve never told anyone, not even my wife.

I was a 20 year old manager at a subway in a very busy airport. I was a stupid kid and took the whole manager thing a bit too serious, to the point where I refused to let myself take a lunch break on Fridays cause weekends were busy. I’d always snack on veggies, chips and cookies. Just enough to keep me over till I got off.

But a super busy day would always kick my ass. I’d usually end up working 10-12 hour shifts and I was always in such a hurry, I’d end up taking my son to McDonald’s or Wendy’s on the way home.

One day my son asked, “Daddy, why do you work at subway if you don’t like it?”

I was so ashamed I was honestly speechless. I told him subways good for us and **** but he just looked at me.

The next day I packed a contains of chicken and cheese and made him a sandwich on the way home. He loved it.

I quickly learned that a pre membuat easy meal to have on the go, but with a full time job, a 2nd job (dog walking), and my part time gig (Landscaping) I didn’t really have time to meal prep much. So I just made sandwiches ahead of time and kept them in my car.

I’d have enough left over for him to have for school lunch and I’d have a good lunch myself on the way home.

I’d overcharge everyone $1 on some BS round up to feed the kids nonsense and I’d pocket the money and buy chicken and cheese at sam’s club and keep them at the airport and every 2 weeks, make a ton of sandwiches for my family and keep them in the freezer at my house.

It was enough for a week and a half of us having subways on the go. My wife loved the sandwiches so much, she’d pack them in my son’s bag when I’d take him to grandma and grandpas and she’d keep a few for herself. She works from home, so she could keep them frozen and have lunch whenever she wanted. She loves subway, and I love just saying I’m a good dad.

My son knew I was taking food, but I was his DAD, he thought I was cool.

But he asked how I was able to afford to buy so much food. I told him I saved up and I wanted to make a special meal for him and my wife because I was working so much. He didn’t really buy it but he didn’t really question it either. He was 7, he didn’t care, it was subway.

When he was 8, I transferred to a subway that was close to our house and I worked mornings. That was almost a year ago.

But for a year, I took so much subway food from my airport subway that I had to replace the freezer in our house.

When I transferred, the owner asked me why I didn’t follow company policy and I told him I didn’t know what he was talking about. He called me a liar and let the district manager know. I had to tell and I almost got fired. Luckily my DM was a super cool guy and he knew I was a good manager so he just gave me a verbal warning.

The owner was pissed I left. But I didn’t get fired. So I’m still a subway manager and I’m still buying in bulk at sam’s club. I just don’t steal it anymore.

Edit: It’s been a very long day and I’d just like to say thank you to everyone. I didn’t expect this level of attention and I appreciate you all for giving me the time of day.

As I look back on it I can’t believe I was that person. My son is amazing now and I do my best with him and my two other kids. It’s not easy being a parent and it’s definitely not easy being a working one. I also am grateful I didn’t get fired from my job and I actually do my best to make sure that kind of thing doesn’t happen at my stores.

I won’t call myself a good person, but I’m trying. I’d also like to say that if any of you work in fast food, I feel you. I understand the struggle. I’m also sorry if I’ve disappointed anyone or ruined your perception of a chain establishment.

To end this just know that I love my kids more than anything and I’d do anything to make sure they’re happy and healthy.
