I (28F) haven’t spoken to my best friend (28F) since her then-boyfriend sexually harassed me over a year ago.

She and I became friends about six years ago when we both worked at a marketing firm. She was an intern, I was a copywriter and she needed help completing her assignments. I helped her a lot during her internship, especially with the company’s final project and when she was hired full-time, her senior colleagues assumed I had contributed significantly to her work. I didn’t bother correcting them because it didn’t really matter. I had been working there for years and was well-liked by senior management.

She moved on from the company a couple of years ago, and I stayed. I was promoted to senior copywriter last year, but she became a brand manager somewhere else. I quit my job in January this year to join my current company as a marketing manager. It’s a tech firm, and I was given a very good salary and benefits. I liked the work as well, so I decided to stay, and renewed my contract last month.

My friend and I became distant after her boyfriend’s incident, and we haven’t spoken for over a year. Until a few weeks ago. She messaged me out of nowhere and apologized for what happened. I ignored her, but she kept messaging, and calling me. I eventually talked to her, and she said she’d been wanting to contact me for a long time but was afraid and didn’t know what to say. She said she hoped I could forgive her. I told her it was fine, and we talked for a little.

She then told me she’d broken up with her boyfriend, and she missed us being friends. I told her I forgave her and was also excited to catch up.

A couple of days later, she called me and said she was going to stay with me for a few nights. I agreed, and we had a lot of fun during her visit. However, on the last night of her stay, I saw something that made me change my mind. I was taking a late-night walk (it helps me sleep).

I was walking down the street, and saw a young woman (probably in her early 20s) walking ahead of me. A man approached her, and I recognized him. It was my friend’s ex-boyfriend. I had only met him once (he harassed me the same night), but I was sure it was him. I immediately felt uneasy, and watched as he talked to the young woman. The woman appeared hesitant and afraid, but then she agreed to go somewhere with him.

I immediately called the police, and gave them the location. I told them what I’d seen, and they assured me someone would come to check it. I felt guilty letting this girl go with him and I thought of following them. But I didn’t want to interfere, and I just watched them leave.

The police called me after fifteen minutes, and asked me to identify the man. I went to the station, and identified him. He was arrested a few hours later.

The next morning, my friend called me and said she couldn’t believe it. She said she hadn’t spoken to her ex-boyfriend since they’d broken up months ago, but then she’d received a call from him yesterday morning. She said he told her he’d been fired because of his behavior. She asked me if I’d had anything to do with it, but I denied it.

She kept calling me, and then she showed up at my apartment. She said she’d been asking around, and she knew I’d been the one to get him fired. I admitted it, and she accused me of ruining his life. She shouted at me, and left.

We haven’t spoken since, and I don’t know if she’ll ever talk to me again. I don’t think I did anything wrong, but I’m not sure. AITA?
