What is wrong with the current system that we all talk about fixing?

I don't think there are many people who would argue the current system we have is half way decent, but I have not heard a VALID argument as to what is wrong with it and why. I mean we have an excess of supply for basically every category. There is more food than people to eat it. More houses than people who want them. More cars than people who want them. The only thing that people NEED are resources, not products. So why don't we just pay people to generate resources? Instead we require them to generate a useless product that gets thrown away.

Take farmers for example. Why should they be paid to grow a head of lettuce if no one is guaranteed to buy it? That is a waste of resources. We should pay farmers to grow lettuce until we have enough. If you are working a job, you should only be working the amount of hours necessary to keep our resources up to our desired capacity. If you don't want to work in resources, you should be free to do whatever you want. We could have a large sample size vote on the quality of products every year and just pay the top companies in each category to produce the quantity we need.

So what is wrong with a system like this?
