It’s always a good idea to block someone on social media if you’re going to break up with them. This was something Ellie knew all to well as one morning she woke up to find that her ex girlfriend was posting on her Facebook wall repeatedly.

It was a weird first message, just a link to some random website, but it was weird enough that as soon as Ellie woke up and saw that her ex had posted on her wall fifty-one times since midnight, she knew that she had to see what was so important. She followed the link to a website that was completely blank except for a paragraph of text like: “Ellie, please forgive me. We didn’t mean to hurt you. We just couldn’t be with you.”

Ellie immediately clicked the back button and blocked her ex, but the damage was already done. As she rolled out of bed and made her way to the bathroom for her morning shower, she felt a presence in the room with her. It was only once she saw her own reflection in the mirror that she realized she wasn’t alone. There was a shadow standing just behind her.

Ellie stopped in her tracks, too petrified to move, as the shadow figure just stood there, not moving. After a few seconds, it spoke to her in a voice that she knew all too well. “We couldn’t be with you Ellie. We’re sorry, but you just weren’t enough.”

Ellie still didn’t move, but she managed to choke out the question “Who are you?”

“We are you.” It replied. “We are what’s left of you.”

Ellie mustered the strength to turn around and face her ex, but where her ex should have been, there was only a twisted and disfigured version of her own face staring back at her. It’s elongated eyes were black as coal and it’s teeth were twisted and jagged, similar to what Ellie imagined a piranha’s teeth were like.

At the sight of this thing, Ellie screamed. A hoarse, loud scream that echoed through the small apartment. She tried to run, but her legs were frozen in place. She tried to speak, but her voice was lost in the screams that just wouldn’t stop. All she could do was stand there and watch in horror as her ex slowly started to walk towards her, its twisted face contorted into a twisted grin.

The dead thing continued to walk closer, slowly, until it reached out a twisted hand and covered Ellie’s mouth.

“Shh” It said “You’re mine now. Forever and always. I love you”

As the dead thing spoke, Ellie felt herself being pulled into its embrace. But just as she was inevitably about to be consumed by it, she heard a voice from behind her. “Ellie?” It was her neighbor. She had heard the screams and was rushing to her aid, unaware of the hellscape that was about to ensue.

When the thing turned to face the neighbor, Ellie couldn’t help but giggle. The neighbor looked terrified, it was only a matter of time before she screamed herself into a panic attack. “Shh... Don’t worry. I wont hurt you... Yet.” The twisted thing said.

Ellie laughed again, and this time wasn’t able to stop herself. She laughed as the neighbor screamed. She laughed as the neighbors boyfriend ran into the room wielding a baseball bat. She laughed as the boyfriend swung his bat at her ex, but missed, and hit Ellie right in the head, knocking her out.

She woke up in the hospital several days later. The police were by her side, asking her questions about the events that took place at her apartment that morning. Ellie tried to recount the events that had transpired, but the cops looked at her like she was crazy.

“What do you mean your ex was a twisted zombie? Where is it now?” They asked her.

“I don’t know, but it was definitely there. It was going to kill me. And then my neighbor’s boyfriend killed me with a baseball bat.” She replied.

The cops looked at each other before turning back to her and saying “We didn’t find any twisted zombie... And your neighbor’s boyfriend didn’t hit you with a baseball bat. You fell down the stairs and hit your head. Your just confused.”

Ellie didn’t believe this. She knew what she saw. She knew that her ex had been in her apartment that morning, ready to kill her. And as much as the police tried to convince her otherwise, she knew that it was still out there, just waiting for her. And she knew that when it came for her again, she wouldn’t be so lucky.

When they finally let her go home, Ellie was relieved. She didn’t want to be in that hospital any longer than she had to. As she walked into her apartment, she couldn’t help but feel a presence in the room with her. She turned to look and sure enough, there on the couch, was her ex.

The days that followed were strenuous to say the least. Ellie couldn’t leave the apartment, because her ex was there. But the police wouldn’t help her because they didn’t believe her. And to make matters worse, her ex just sat on the couch doing some weird dance thing with its arms and singing some sort of nursery rhyme at the top of its lungs.

“Eenie meenie mino, Ellie’s gonna burn. Eenie meenie mino, Ellie’s gonna learn.”

It went on and on, hour after hour. Day after day. Until Ellie just couldn’t take it anymore. In a fit of rage, she grabbed the baseball bat that was now laying beside her bed and swung it at her ex, hitting it right in the head, killing it.

Finally, after days of being trapped in her apartment, Ellie felt free. She felt like she could finally live again. She was so relieved to finally have a moment to breathe without that twisted thing breathing down her neck. She had killed the monster and was finally safe.

But as she stood there, catching her breath after having committed such a heinous murder, she heard a noise coming from the bathroom. It sounded like running water, but she knew that she hadn’t turned the faucet on. In fact, she hadn’t even used the bathroom all day.

When she went to investigate, what she found horrified her beyond anything she could have imagined. There, in the bathroom, was an endless line of twisted versions of her own face, each one more twisted than the last. And they were all singing in unison.

“Eenie meenie mino, Ellie’s gonna burn. Eenie meenie mino, Ellie’s gonna learn.”

And as Ellie stood there frozen in terror, unable to move or speak, the creatures all started to turn and look at her, their twisted faces contorted into blood thirsty grins.

And as they turned, they spoke in unison. “We are you. We are what’s left of you. We are forever. And we will never die.”
