I worked at a Marriott in the room service department for 5 years while in college. This was a very fun and rewarding experience for me.

Covid gave a shit ton of light on how important travel and hospitality workers are. Seeing things from the other side is so important.

So here are a few tips on how to travel with your flag held high!

1. **Be kind to staff at no matter what time**

Back in the day the idea that staff at hotels were held to a high standard was expected because tips were always high.
I dont know if the economy is just shit these days tips are low but from an employee perspective we dont get paid much.

I would do room service calls at 4am. It would be pouring rain. I would walk outside for 10 minutes to get to another building. I would get there and be yelled at or cussed at. I would get tipped .50

We are just trying to make it through our shift just like everyone else.

2. **Be aware with Hotel credit cards**

If you pay with a Hotel credit card be prepared to call your bank. Hotels charge multiple times for incidentials.
Once your stay is over the charges wont show up for a few days, then your card will be disputed and you’ll have to call your bank or the hotel.

3. **Please do not take all the towels**

I know the covid era really changed this but dont take the extra towels from the room!
We have to inventory towels at the end of each stay and when you take them its more work for us.
You dont need 10 towels for 1 night

4. **Please for the love of jesus do not take the slippers**

When a guest leaves please do not take the slippers!
Slippers get ordered in bulk, they are cheap quality and come in packs of 5 pairs.
When you take one slipper that means we have to throw out the other 4.

5. **When asking staff stupid questions**

If you ask the front desk “can you help me get a bus ticket to NYC?” Or something dumb like that just say hi first.
I’ve been at my desk for 12 hours and dont remember the last time a guest said hi.

6. **When asking a front desk for help and we gave you options**

If we gave you options for a solution and you say “whats the difference?” Then you should stop talking.
We just explained the difference.

7. **When asking housekeeping for more things**

If housekeeping brought you 2 extra towels and you realize you really need 5, just ask.
Dont say “can you bring me more towels. I dont want to be burden on you” Then ask a bunch of questions about the type of towels, the color, the thread count then get upset at us for waiting too long.

8. **The front desk doesnt remember when you asked them something**

If you asked a question earlier in the day. We forgot about it.
If you want something please ask then remind us.
We have a lot going on.

9. **When you’re a dumb ass alcohol breath drunk at 3am and dont remember your room**

We’re not trying to be mean. Were trying to keep you safe.
If we dont have a key to do a welfare check on you then we cant just let you walk away.
If you’re drunk and cant remember your room number then go to bed on the floor. We will help you in the morning.

10. **When you leave a negative review because of animal instincts**

If you leave a negative review because we made you wait at the front desk an extra 2 minutes because a cockroach was crawling across the desk and it scared us it’s not our fault.
We dont want animals in the lobby and they will be removed.
