What if the Earth actually IS flat?

Hello. I am a heavy user of the worldbuilding subreddit, and other than making a post for r/wtffun, this is my first actual post for this sub. I have no idea how to make a post here, so to be honest, with my lack of attention span, I'm only going to post this in one place. I thought it would be interesting to flip the script on the old flat earth theory; instead of assuming that the Earth is flat because some YouTube video convinced you, what if we were to live in a world where it actually WAS flat?<br><br>Our old notion of the Earth being round, sometimes seen as the heliocentric model, is seen as heretical where it is talked about at all. Obviously, we must use a different model to figure out how the Earth rotates. In this world, people have used a variation of the other ancient belief about Earth rotation, the geocentric model, and instead decided that the Earth rotates around the sun. Many have questioned the fact that the Earth is flat, and a few have used the proposed idea of a round Earth to explain some of the phenomena that science cannot explain; this has only given them a bad reputation.<br><br>Our modern day astronauts have only reached a small part of space; only low orbit satellites are available, and people have only gotten to a certain height in space. It is not uncommon to hear of people going to the edge of the Earth and attempting to explore what lies beyond the boundaries that have been imposed to keep us from falling off the edge. These are usually just for posterity, as the people that do this never come back. Some believe that the Earth was made this way to punish us for being some sort of evil creatures, and that only when we have finished paying penance to God will the world be round and we will all be able to explore the depths of space without fear of falling off.<br><br>The Earth contains 5 oceans: The Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic oceans, which we in our world have also discovered, as well as the larger Aether ocean, which makes up the majority of the edge and is where the boundary lies. The Aether ocean is home to many of the sea monsters that you hear about in our world, as well as many new and original ones. Many brave adventurers have attempted to explore this ocean, and most have also never come back.<br><br>Some people have figured out that the Earth is round, but this knowledge is heavily guarded and mostly has been lost and rediscovered multiple times throughout history, only to be stamped out by governments trying to keep the truth from getting out. These are known as the Circumists; they attempt to spread their message through secret meetings and unmarked books that are taken as heretical texts.<br><br>I hope this has wet your appetite and made you think about some of the implications and where you would prefer to live.
