My dad is 70, my twins are 16. Why is it unacceptable to call him "dad" and my children "the boys" in a respectful tone, rather than of the idioms "my boys"?

I'm trying to say that because of my dad's stroke, he's now younger than me, and my kids that are 16 are now older than me, but everyone seems to be offended, like if I was saying something racist. I don't get it.
