What's the best way to clean a firearm?

I know obviously use the brush and then use the cloth. I've heard of gun lube but I don't know if I should use it or lean towards a gun cleaning solvent. I don't know when to use the Hoppes no 9 solvent<br><br><br>EDIT: I use the militech cleaning kit as I'm active duty in the army
