Why do people get upset at the "wrong" pronouns?

I just don't get it. Im a big fan of equality and although I don't understand the desire to change sex, I support trans people's right to change their gender. But the one thing I really don't understand is getting upset/upset at people for using the "wrong" pronouns. To me that seems quite discriminatory and I don't understand where the reasoning for that comes from.
