What were the Boer's reasons for fighting the British other than the gold?

I know that the British decided to invade the Boer territories as the British wanted the gold there and wanted the diamond and gold mines under British control. But I was wondering what were the reasons the Boer's fought back after being invaded by the British, were they fighting just for the freedom to remain Dutch speaking and protestant or were they fighting for other reasons like preserving their culture, customs or beliefs?
