Swapping springs without a slave pin?

Hey guys, I currently have a JP Enterprises CTR-02 stock with a JP silent spring kit. I want to upgrade to a Sprinco M-100 spring but I don’t have a slave pin. Instead of buying one can I swap the springs in a vice using a wooden dowel to keep everything contained? The stock is an AR15 CTR-02 one. Will this method work?
