Do I need a car in Paris?

I'm about to move to Paris for six months to work as an intern at a French bank. I'm staying at a residence of the university that is in the south of Paris. I've been to Paris a few times and I have seen it, so I don't need a car to go sightseeing.

I'm just wondering if I need it to go shopping.

I live about one kilometer from the eastbound metro line, but there are plenty of supermarkets in easy walking distance. Given I'm only there for six months I can consider a small apartment size fridge, and my fellow students have all sorts of cars so I could levy a small "tax" on those who deliver my groceries to my doorstep.

If I don't get a car so I'll have more money to spend. Does anyone have any experience doing this?
