Daughters are a lottery ticket, sons are business.

So I like to challenge the idea that the male parental bond is the same as the female one. In the past I've had a lot of pushback, people that genuinely believe the deepest bond for parents is to their firstborn, not to their male child. So here's the difference:

A son is business. You have to make sure he's making good grades, goes to a good school and has a secure career. You have to groom him to be able to take care of himself, to not become a burden on society, and to make sure that he will provide for his family on day. You have to instill your knowledge and life-experience in him, so his life doesn't go in circles. He can either be everything you do good or he can be everything wrong with you. You have to give him a good base to start with.

A daughter is a lottery-ticket. You want to let her have fun, and that's it. She cannot make money for your house, she cannot provide for you in your old age, she cannot carry on your family name. But maybe, just maybe, she'll find a good man who'll hook you up. So make sure she doesn't have too much drama (i.e. a child of her own) and that she has a good smile, long hair and a good dress sense. Because it's not about how you treat her, it's about making her pretentious enough to show the world to show the world you're not a loser. It's all about how you will benefit from it.
