Is it possible to reduce the concept of "race" down to a basic sociological definition?

I've been trying to get myself more well read on race and race subcultures and it seems to result in the same question over and over. There exist racial constructs for any distinguishable trait, so long as they aren't too vague. It would seem that racial constructs exist wherever there's a group that, sociologically, exists outside of the majority of society. This seems to hold true for people with disabilities, people of different sexual identities, and people of different body compositions.

So, could we reduce the concept of "race" down to simply "a racial group is any group within a society that exists outside of that society's mainstream, regardless of the cause of that estrangement"?
