I (20f) am 42% black 42% white 17% Native American. My boyfriend (21m) is 76% black 20% white 4% Native American. I know these percentages because our dads are friends and when we were little they did Ancestry DNA on us as a fun project.

We have a few events per year in which both sides of our family get together and celebrate black culture. It’s a very fun event and you do not have to be black to enjoy or come to the event.

This year, I decided to invite my boyfriend to my black family event and I was trying to be cute by also inviting his black family. “Hey boyfriend! I know your black family misses you, so I’m inviting them to my black family event!”, “black family” is a shitty short hand that everyone in my family uses to explain our family and the black culture inviting them to everything.

His “black family” consists of his maternal side who is black, and his paternal side who is white (my boyfriend is black though just in case you wondered).

He said it was cute and very nice of me to invite his whole family, so I asked them over to my whole black family event. Well, his whole family turned out to be his white family as well, because inviting them to everything is how black people function.

So, I invited them to my (black) family’s event, thinking it was just his black family, because they’re black.

Long story short, they thought it was stupid to have a black event and asked if there would be black food and “other black things” at the event.

I said “I know there will be fried chicken, collard greens and… 42% black people??” He didn’t find it funny.

I also invited him to my black family’s black Christmas party, so that’s the exact topic of this post: AITA for inviting his white (paternal) family to my black family’s black Christmas party?
