I've been seeing a lot of posts with titles like this on Reddit (not only here) "You're 45 and still homophobic?" or "Why are people still racist in 2023?"

The first problem with this is that it just makes people defensive. When you just lash out at someone for being homophobic or racist, they will just become defensive and won't listen to what you have to say. This won't change their minds, and is overall unhelpful.

The second problem with this is that you don't actually know if they are 45 and still homophobic, you just see their comment history. You don't know their age race or gender and so you're just making assumptions.

The third problem with this is that it just drives people more towards the far right. When someone who isn't that politically active just sees "You're 45 and still homophobic?" they are more likely to go towards the far right because they see the left as just being rude and name-calling. This just further polarizes people which is bad for democracy in general and causes conflict that will just tear a country apart.

So overall, on the internet you shouldn't just assume someone is homophobic or racist without first getting to know them.
