I just moved to Oslo - and I know there are a lot of threads about this, so forgive me if I'm repeating anything - but I wanted to share my observations so far. I'm a Black American and moved here from Texas for work. I'll just put it this way - Texas is very different from Oslo lol.

1. Food - it's expensive. I get that. But how can it be lawful to charge $60 for a cheeseburger and fries? That being said, it's kind of assay to cook. I was spoiled by living in Austin and having access to the best Tex-Mex you've ever had in your life. I miss it very much.

2. This thing you hear about Norwegians being cold and stand-offish is true. I had a woman named Karen ask me (not in a nice way) why I was living in her country. I politely explained I was here for work. I spend a lot of time thinking about her and how she conducts herself in a very polite society. I wonder if she talks to everyone like that.

3. I LOVE the public transportation. I live in a pretty suburban area of town, and can get anywhere I want to go for a few dollars.

4. There was a "slave auction" at some bar here. I have no idea what this was supposed to be, but some folks were on stage and were bidding on other people to be "slaves" for the night. I don't get it. It was weird as hell and made me very uncomfortable.

5. The way people talk about race here is interesting. My partner is South African and was talking about how she's used to very open and honest discussions about race. A Norwegian guy in the conversation made some remark about "Well we don't really have any Black people here, so it's not the same." They just stared at us.

6. I've heard a lot of remarks about "ghetto children" - by which they mean kids from immigrant families who commit crimes and generally cause trouble. It is odd to me how much they want to separate themselves from these families. I'm not sure what to make of it.

In general, I like it here. I was warned my Blackness would be a problem, but I haven't had any real issues. I get weird looks on the train sometimes, which can be uncomfortable, but I've had that all my life. I wish I could afford cheeseburgers.
