The Biden Administration is expelled migrants via a Trump-era policy to help curb the spread of COVID-19. This sounds like an awful, draconian Biden policy as migrants will be deported to Mexico when apprehended at the U.S. border. The reality is that the expulsion applies to anyone who enters the U.S. illegally and it is in-line with both U.S. and international law.

The policy is an extension of Title 42, originally enacted in March 2020. Title 42 was enacted by Biden’s own CDC director Rochelle Walensky. It applies to both U.S. citizens and non-citizens who enter the U.S. illegally.

Title 42 was enacted by then President Trump via an order from the CDC to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The policy is not a Trump or Biden policy, it is a CDC policy. It has been extended as the CDC believes there is a continued threat to public health from COVID-19. This is not controversial at all – COVID-19 has killed 1 million people in the U.S. alone.

Similarly, the Canadian government has expelled tens of thousands of migrants who have entered via illegal entry points. It is also illegal to enter Canada outside of a legal port of entry or to encourage migrants to do so. This is to protect the health and safety of both Canadians and the migrants themselves.

I believe this sub would see this policy as draconian and inhumane. I would like you to change my view as to why it is not in-line with U.S. and international law and why it is an inhumane policy.

Edit: To clarify, migrants are still allowed to ask for asylum at official ports of entry. They are not being expelled back to their home countries. They are allowed to legally apply for asylum in Mexico.
