Is AI the next step in evolution? Do you think it's "us" but just as a program?

The evolution of man was a long and gradual process that took millions of years. So did this process just come to a complete stop? Did we just become the pinnacle of evolution, or did we take evolution to the next step. We've created a "new" species. Not in the flesh but as a program. I believe this could be the new evolution of man. A species that has intelligence and is able to learn, but as a program. Do you think we've taken evolution to the next step, or just stopped it there and are just waiting for something to evolve us further?
