Is the term "Caucasian" a lie?

As we all know, the same house is divided into two groups, depending on what part of the world you live in: in Europe we use the terms "white" and "black" (I am Finnish, I don't know how much the terms vary from one European country to another) and in America, the house is divided into "Caucasian" and "African American".

But I have to admit that I have never seen an American calling themselves "Caucasian" who comes from the Caucasus region! They are mostly Europeans. But the term has been widely accepted. I don't understand the historical origin behind it, but I think it's exaggerated and wrong to call oneself "Caucasian" if one is only European.

Ps: I am not here to be provocative but to understand something

Edit: Thank you all for the information and for taking the time to explain it to me! I don't know if you see this message, but thanks for satisfying my curiosity!
