The NBA means more to China than China means to the NBA

I'm surprised more people aren't talking about this. Remember this rumor in January 2019 that came out about how some Chinese company was going to become one of the NBA's largest sponsors? That rumor got shot down pretty quickly when the two major candidates to be the Chinese sponsor, Vivo and Xiaomi, both released statements saying that they were in talks years before but had little interest in sponsoring the NBA. I realize now that was done in preparation to the Daryl Morey situation that happened in October 2019.

Last week, there was another rumor that came out about how the Chinese government was going to buy a minority stake in the NBA. The next day, the Chinese government put out a statement saying that the report was entirely untrue and that the Chinese government had little to no interest in investing in the NBA.

The NBA means more to China than China means to the NBA. They've been trying to buy into the NBA's exclusive club for years and are constantly getting rebuffed. They pretend like they don't care but in reality they do care that they are unable to buy in.

It's funny because I feel like this is one of the few instances where you have a communist country that is being more capitalist than a capitalist nation.
