I answer medical helplines at my university and I couldn't believe what I heard last night.

So I’m a junior at a large university and I volunteer at the medical center as a sort of thing to build my resume to get into med school. I man a phone line and people call and we listen to their problems and try to help them the best we can by directing them to a doctor or sending an ambulance if we deem it necessary. It’s pretty simple.

We took calls varying from the mundane to the intense. The most intense calls usually being very serious injuries or pregnancies. Nothing too out of the ordinary for people in med school.

I was about to end my shift when I received a strange call. It was from a guy claiming he needed help. This is the recording. It was very strange and honestly, I’m not sure what to make of it. When I liked to analyze it further, it was a long distance call and I couldn’t track his location or find out who it was. I also lost contact during our conversation, so there wasn’t anything I could do.

[Recording starts]

Me: Medical Center. What’s your emergency?

Guy: Hey. Yeah I need some help. I just….My wife….she’s gone. Something happened to her and I think she’s dead.

Me: I’m sorry. What happened?

Guy: I don’t know. She was in the kitchen making dinner and I was watching tv. Then I heard this….I don’t know. This cracking, like popping sound. It sounded mechanical and I could tell where it was coming from. When I got to her, she was slumped over on the ground dead. I think she suffered a heart attack or stroke or something.

Me: Sir, does your wife have a history of heart attacks or strokes?

Guy: Yeah, she’s had one before.

Me: I think we’re going to have to send an ambulance your way. If you can give me your address, that would be great.

Guy: Yeah of course. 4445 Lively.

Me: Okay. An ambulance should be there in 10 minutes.

Guy: Wait. No.

Me: What is it sir?

Guy: I don’t need an ambulance. I think something….My wife….she’s moving. She looks….Okay. I think there’s something wrong with her.

Me: Okay. Is she in pain? Is she conscious?

Guy: Yeah. She looks…..fine. I don’t know. She looks….different. Do you hear that? (rustling and murmuring noises in background and line goes dead)

Me: Sir? Sir?

(Record ends)

Like I said, the call itself was pretty strange and the sounds he was making were crazy. I tried to call back and text his number, but it went straight to voicemail. I looked up his address online and there was no record of it. As if that address didn’t even exist. I looked up the street name just out of curiosity but nothing showed up in the area. It was like he was calling me from a place that didn’t even exist.

I just can’t get the sound of the cracking out of mind. It was honestly haunting. I almost wonder if this was some kind of joke. But it still bugs me. I guess it’s one of those unsolved mysteries.
