Is it true that the only way to make yourself more likely to be 'awakened' is to become more spiritually awakened?

I was reading about a guy named David Icke and it is said that his 'awakening' to the true nature of reality was not an accident, but something that happened after he was 'chosen' for some reason. I think this is what is meant by the 'glitch'. He became spiritually awakened before the physical awakening happened. I wonder if this is what we should be doing in order to become 'awakened' to this reality.
