Is the AR pistol craze dead?

I remember when pistol calibre AR’s first came out a few years ago and everyone was hyping them up as the next big thing. The configurations, the size, the convenience of being an AR in a pistol. They looked really fun and a lot was said about their home defense potential.

But now I don’t see many people talking about them. I’m a hunter, and so I don’t use any AR’s and don’t pay much attention to them but I can’t see a single reason to buy one unless it’s just to get something different. The pistol configurations can be done so much easier and cheaper with a pistol. Would a 9mm or .40 or .45 AR be anything else than a weirdly shaped pistol that’s twice as expensive as an actual pistol? And at hunting calibers, why wouldn’t you just get an actual rifle? They’re so much cheaper, made better, more available, and have been tried and tested for their purpose.

Is the AR pistol just a weird fad that pistol calibre Glocks and pistol calibre carbines are replacing?
