CMV: As a young engineer, I’m not going to relinquish my seat to an elderly woman.

I got some decent comments on my last thread so here’s another one, this time I want to argue about seating on public transport. When we hop on the underground or bus, we all know what we're thinking deep down, who will get up for the elderly person, or the young mother with kids, or people with disabilities, or people who’re just in obvious discomfort, in this case, I’m happy to say that that person will not be me.

Granted I’m not some modern day Robert Jordan on horseback with a sword in my hand, but for some reason I’ve just never been considered the type of person who’ll give up his seat for anything, ever. I might look like a thug, who knows. I’m 6’3, strong and in great shape and whether or not you think that I hate you for having kids, I’m just not going to give up my seat. When the bus stops and an elderly person raises their walking stick to gesture to an empty seat, I will not give up my seat. I will stare blankly into space. I will not look at them. I will not let them sit on my arse. I will not let them sit down. I will forget that they’re even there. I have 100% given up my seat before though, to someone in obvious discomfort, like someone who’s clearly in pain or someone who’s fainted. But for a young mother and her baby? Nope. For an elderly person? Nope.

I’m not trying to be an asshole. I give money to kids who’re trying to repair their car on the side of the road, and I volunteer at my church, and I’ll always hold the door for the person behind me, and I’m not a sociopath. I’ve worked hard to get where I am and I’m not moving so you can reach the overhead bin easier, or so you can sit next to your family, or so your kid can sit down, or for any other reason. I’m not moving. I will stare at you coldly in the eyes and pretend you never asked me and I will keep pretending until you stop looking at me. I think the most annoying part though is when elderly people give you that ‘you’re young you don’t need to be sitting down’ face why yes, I do need to be sitting down. I wake up at 5am every day, I rush to get to work and I stand and walk around until around 11pm every day. I’m tired. You’re not going to guilt me into standing so you can sit and rest your old legs, boomer. I don’t give a single fuck whether you think I’m a bad person or not. And for those of you thinking about defending your old ‘why don’t you give up your seat you young asshole?!’ Well, I don’t, and it’s been this way since I was 16 and I’m now 22. It’s not like this is new for me, I’ve done this since high school. You can call me an asshole, I don’t care. I will not go to hell for not giving up a seat on a bus, it’s inevitable that humans will die and that’s just what comes with life. Just because you’re old doesn’t mean you deserve to sit on my seat. I got there before you, tell the government to stop raising your council tax so you don’t have to take the bus anymore. I give up my seat when the person next to me gives up their seat, and they don’t.

This is a topic me and my friends have discussed many times and I’m going to start a thread for CMV just to see how many of Redditains disagree with this view.
