AITA for giving the Valentine’s Day gift I was given to a friend instead of returning it?

My (17m) ex girlfriend broke up with me yesterday and gave me back the valentines gift I gave to her (some cute little stuffed animal). I took it home and put it in a drawer.

For context, my senior year is almost finished. My original plan was to stay together until Valentine’s Day (since we’d been together for two years at that point) and then break up around April prior to going to college (I got into a college that is in a different state so I won’t be able to stay together even if I wanted to).

She beat me to the breakup on the day of valentines and included giving me back the gift as one of the reasons she was breaking up.

She is a very caring person but has started becoming more distant (both physically and emotionally), and the breakup took place in the parking lot where she told she was upset I was going to college in another state. When I explained that my decision was made over a year ago, and she could have broken up with me anytime, she screamed at me and said made me feel like an asshole for not getting into a college near us.

The whole breakup was really confusing.

I went to my swim meet that night (got second place in both my events) and that night, one of my good friends (Jack) confided that he was staying with his grandparents temporarily while his parents were dealing with some health issues and that his long distance girlfriend had broken up with him.

He was clearly in a very bad place emotionally, so I gave him the stuffed animal to try and cheer him up.

The issue that’s started is that I told my ex the story of what happened to the stuffed animal when she texted to see how I was doing. She got very upset and made me feel like an asshole for giving it away and not returning it.

AITA for giving it to my friend?
