Do white people insist on being called "Caucasion" in their day to day life like some black people insist on being called "African American"?

For context i am African and i had no idea "Afro American" was associated with specifically black Americans until a black American told me i was incorrect to call myself "African American". I simply meant American of African descent, which is what "Afro American" means to me and my fellow Africans, but i guess i got scolded for using a phrase i didnt know had a different meaning for black people. Anyway back to my question, i have noticed that white people generally seem not to care very much for the nuances of these distinctions, and i havent run into a white person who insists on the same level of specificity as some black people, but the internet is a big place and i havent met every white person.
