"Close Your Eyes" or "Go to Bed" AREN'T instructions. Telling kids of 2-5 years old to fall asleep is not an easy feat, and your syntax association is wrong

Parenting seems to rely heavily on such instructions, but in practice, they don't achieve anything but pissing off the toddler. I admit that I have said those lines many times, yet I have also learned to point them to another activity which they may accidentally fall asleep doing.

My argument is that the syntax of instruction and the required response are completely incompatible with the facts of physiology.

If only we could just close our eyes and fall asleep, I'd do that every day to catch up with the lack of sleep from previous days. I'd close my eyes and fall asleep right now and I'd sleep for a week. We need to gradually move from one activity to another to snooze.

CMV.
