If you can’t afford to tip, don’t go out to eat

Everyone knows that servers rely on tips and even with the recent trend of raising wages for servers, tips still make up a majority of their income. I’ve never understood people who go out to eat and don’t have the money to tip. Servers are doing a service for you, they deserve to be compensated for that service. If you can’t afford to tip, that means you shouldn’t be going out to eat. Plan and budget accordingly.

Edit: For those of you saying not tipping when you receive bad service is okay, I completely disagree. The service may be bad but that doesn’t mean the server isn’t working on their largest tables as well as yours. You received subpar service, sure, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t put work in. Don’t go out to eat if you can’t afford to tip. If you feel you have received subpar service and can’t afford to tip, kindly tell the server why you didn’t leave a tip. That is enough.

Edit: For those of you saying tipping over 15% for no reason is dumb. It’s not dumb. If you get great service, and you can afford to tip 25%, 35%, 50%, you will see the smile in a server’s eyes and the genuine thank you they give you. That right there is the reason we do our job.
