I've been a paramedic for a very long time and people in their 80s and 90s don't get rescued by EMS they get batted back and forth from the hospital to in-law homes (your home) until they die.

But if your spouse is demented, combative, mean etc. you can't just send them to a home. 90% of nursing homes will only take easily managed patients.

You will be forced to care for your spouse and ONLY care for your spouse for a minimum of 5 years. You will do this until you develop health problems and can no longer function.

I have lived a good life, had a great career, and am looking forward to my golden years. The last 5 will be shit but I can accept that. If I am lucky and clever I have 20 years of learning, travel and fun in front of me.

Choose who you marry carefully. It may be the most important decision you make.
