What did our forefathers actually think of the American "civil war"?

This question has intrigued me for quite some time because it seems, from an outside perspective, we don't actually speak about the Civil War in the US that much (altough there are obvious exceptions). It kind of feels like it's largely being swept under the rug and only the names of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis are mentioned.

I'd love to hear your thoughts because my knowledge is largely based on the European school system and common knowledge and I think it'd be sad to just shrug it off and not actually discuss what actually happened.
