Strangest experience I've had (in the ocean)

Years ago, I was lava flow surfing on (short) board on the big island. Lava flow surfing is where the lava flows from the volcano into the ocean and cools, and creates new coastline. It's beautiful and I've never seen anything like it...essentially, the coastline (where the lava meets the ocean) is just molten lava and it cools into lava rocks.

This area was kinda off the beaten path but I went there to surf bc the lava flow was creating ground swell that cleaned the wave up and created a VERY unique wave.

So here's what happened one time:

I paddled out on my surf board and I noticed there were 2 other surfers there. We would wave at each other even tho we were all 100+ ft apart or so. I'm pretty sure they thought I was a guy, since I had short hair and a wetsuit on.

At one point, I looked back and saw that one of the surfers was on a kayak and not a surfboard, and it was a woman with long, curly red hair.

I surfed for a bit, and then looked over, and there were three of us again. So the woman was gone.

Then, I looked back again like 15 minutes later, and there were FIVE of us! I was so weirded out. I don't know of there were actually five of us or if I was just seeing things. I didn't want to be there anymore and I surfed for a bit more, then paddled back in.

Right before I paddled back in, all 3 of us waved at each other.

When I got back to my car, I looked out at the ocean and there was only ONE person surfing, and it was the woman with the curly red hair again.

I just thought that was SO strange. I'm not sure if I was hallucinating or what, but it was so weird!!

Has anyone else ever had a weird experience like that?
